Every-day is a series of photographs of transgender or non-binary people, without classification or mention. It focuses on ways of experiencing one’s gender which, within the framework of social and cultural norms and conventions, trouble or escape the binary system of feminine and masculine. The images document, through the portraits of Ava, Jackie, Leo, Mathieu, Matthias, Maty and Raya, seized in their privacy, a simple but key event, both symbolic and physical; that of getting ready, in front of your mirror, to leave your home. In an apparent harmless everyday life, through a repetition of actions, representations, strategies, histories and convictions specific to each person, the ever fragile project of being oneself is revealed.

The book contains an essay written by exhibition curator Joël Riff (b. 1984, French).

In the expression ”aesthetic canon” which structures the standard of beauty, the term ”canon” refers to the idea of « rule ». These rules, however, inscribed nowhere, enact in a changing way the representation of the beauty in its dimensions certainly aesthetic but also cultural and social. Jeanne Damas is a so called successful « It girl-model-businesswoman » who embodies many modern facets of a feminine ideal. She enjoys a popularity whose global reach could never have been considered before the modern era of social networks. Besides, Jeanne Damas first built this image by posting pictures of her own life: her favorite objects, her way of dressing and putting on makeup—with clothes and cosmetics from her own brand.

The idea behind this series was to let Jeanne Damas re-play against a neutral background; to recreate gestures, postures, and to put back in scene elements and iconic tools that cement this public conception acclaimed by her fans and by the media. This is what ranks her as an ”icon” in fashion. The result is a study, a kind of investigation or quest for proof into the representation of the body, an enigmatic puzzle of flesh, objects and tools, which in the manner of a « cadavre exquis » brings into play the expression of these aesthetic tacit rules. The latter borrow as much from the classical « contrapposto », the figures of ”Odalisque”, of those of ”femme fatale” in movies holding a cigarette, or as « Pop art » references, from the presentation of the body in a clothes e-shop than from poses while taking selfies.

By bringing together these images, Iconography by Vincent Ferrané (b. 1974, French) explains as much as it questions the elements of a popular representation of feminine beauty.

Visitor is a series of photographs of women artists in their studio in Paris.

The artist atelier is not just any space. Often secret, intimate and complex, it is a zone of freedom and experimentation but also of hard work and doubts; a place of « mise en abyme » for the artist and the work of art, where every detail can make sense. For women artists, things have changed for the better since Linda Nochlin’s scathing statement on art history and institutions in her 1971 pioneering essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? However, being sometimes in the majority in art schools, women artists are still under-represented in the art world in 2018.

Visitor strives to find the right distance to capture the mystery, extreme tension and commitment of artistic work. The corpus of images are based on the subtle balance of portraits of women artists who are not in an archetypal representation but who can be guessed by touches through their process, gestures, tools, and the relation between their body and the piece of art that they are creating. Can being a woman be considered as one element among others; sometimes essential, especially for the artists who have strategically chosen to place it as the center of their creation—sometimes secondary or incidental? Stepping aside from an idea of a curation under the main criterion of being a woman or a gender study, Visitor invites to discover the space and the precious time of the creation contained in a work in progress—to observe what makes history in the studio of these seventeen women artists.

In order of appearance: Amélie Bertrand, Apolonia Sokol, Caroline Corbasson, Chloé Quenum, Eva Nielsen, Georgia Russell, Jeanne Briand, Jennifer Caubet, Julie Beaufils, Lucille Uhlrich, Marion Verboom, Mathilde Denize, Maude Maris, Mimosa Echard, Mireille Blanc, Sarah Trouche and Zoé de Soumagnat.

The portrayed artists are all part of the emerging art scene and work in Paris within varied artistic practices, such as painting, sculpture, installation, performance, etc.

Milky Way is a series of pictures of the author’s wife and child during breastfeeding. The aesthetic aspect is determined by the feeding behaviour which imposes its geometry on bodies and on space they occupy. These images contain familiar echoes of classic icons but adorn themselves with modern elements. From these everyday moments, seized with harshness, without bitterness, emerges the force of exchanges between two beings and the milk becomes, as in the Greek legend of the Milky Way, the vector of a world under construction.
